Based in Ballymoney, Co Antrim, Irish Wood and Wool is run by Dougie and Pamela Long. For many years they enjoyed their individual hobbies of woodturning and crochet making items for family and friends, as the end products started to mount they decided to try selling their goods at local craft fairs and markets. Buoyed on by the feedback and positive response from their customers they eventually decided to take the plunge and move to becoming full-time crafters.
Dougie is a self-taught wood turner who through years of practice and experimenting has managed to become very proficient in his art. He makes everything from bowls, dishes and vases to pens, fruit and animals. His two signature pieces which are unique to him are the pens made using the oak from the staves of a Bushmills Whiskey barrel and his cheeseboards with hand turned mice. With the exception of olive wood from Jerusalem he uses only local sustainable sources of wood. He is happy to take commissions and makes many bespoke pieces.
Pamela crochets many different items but specialises in hats for both children and adults. Using a variety of different yarns including 100 % wool, alpaca, cotton and bamboo, she loves to create beautiful hats ranging from bright and funky to cute and cosy. As well as orders for hats she also makes scarves and baby blankets on request.
